Why do you need to plan your new life in a divorce?

You don’t have to be into picture boards and positive thinking to benefit from time spent considering how you want your post-divorce life to be. It’s something everyone should do.

Not only can it keep you going through the inevitable hard days of a divorce, but it can keep you informed and realistic. Here are a few examples of what you should consider:

What custody of the children will look like

Maybe you want to move to another state with your child and get as far away from your soon-to-be ex as possible.

Roll the camera forward a year from now and imagine what that will look like if you get it. It’s Monday morning, and you’re rushing around trying to get the kids to school on time and get to work on time yourself. Your fridge is empty because you spent the whole weekend taking your children to sports practice and various other events. Your boss is pressuring you to work overtime and that means you need to pay a babysitter to look after the kids for an extra hour when they get home from school. You’re exhausted and you’ve not had a night out in months. Wouldn’t it be nice to have someone to share child-rearing duties with so you can have some time to yourself?

What your financial situation will be

It is usually cheaper to live with another adult than live alone (or to be the lone adult in the household). For instance, you alone will pay your rent and you alone will pay your internet. Think about, and write down, what your new monthly expenses will be.

Thinking about such things now puts you in a better position to negotiate an appropriate divorce outcome – one that will work in real life, not just sound good in your head.
