Why a prenup could actually help your marriage

There are some people who view prenups negatively, thinking they will make the marriage weaker. They may understand that a prenup could help them in the event of a divorce. But they still won’t ask their spouse for one because they’ll be concerned that their spouse will think they already have one foot out the door.

However, there are many who believe that a prenup actually does the opposite: It makes the marriage stronger. You could make divorce less likely, not more likely. Why is this?

Having important conversations

When you draft a prenup, you are largely making financial decisions. You have to decide how your assets would be split up in divorce, and a prenup can protect certain assets that may otherwise need to be divided.

Meanwhile, many divorce cases happen because of financial issues. People don’t see money the same way, they have different expectations, they don’t communicate well or they just encounter unnecessary financial stress.

When a couple decides to draft a prenup, it forces them to sit down together and have these financial conversations at the beginning of their relationship. This means that they are more likely to be on the same page regarding how they view their finances, and their expectations are more likely to be in line. This also means that communication will be stronger because they can’t just avoid these sensitive topics.

Drafting a prenup

As you can see, a prenup could help your marriage and help you during a divorce. If you would like to draft one, be sure you know what legal steps you’ll need to take.
